BELIZE REEF AND RAINFOREST 8 DAYS FOR $1199

Trip Valid:
Jan 20 2009 - Jul 21 2009

Duration:
8 Days

Highlights:
Belize is a lovely, sun-drenched nation, a British protectorate that is bounded by the Caribbean Sea, Mexico, and Guatemala. Belize offers some of the best diving and fishing anywhere. The country also has 386 km. of coastline, and numerous islands, reefs, and atolls. The mainstay of the economy is tourism, and people come from all over the globe, for good reason! The climate in Belize is sub-tropical, just right for a timeshare, or even a year-round home. Heat, sunshine, and humidity are prevalent, but so are brisk sea breezes, which help to moderate the temperature and the moisture in the air. There are tradewinds in July, and the average annual temperature is 79 degrees Fahrenheit.

Days 1

Arrival meet and greet service and transfer to Belize City area hotel. Overnight at Radisson Fort George Hotel.

Days 2

Your adventure begins as you head for the wildlife habitat known as the Belize Zoo for an introduction to the country's diverse fauna. The Zoo was created as a sanctuary for the country’s indigenous species and is now home for an impressive array of large cats, primates, reptiles and birds. Jaguars, tapirs, toucan and jabirus are but a few of the exotic species for photo opportunities. A visit to the Zoo gives you the opportunity to see Belize’s amazing wildlife in one location. The adventure continues with a scenic drive up the Western Highway to the Cayo (pronounced Ky-O) District. After lunch we head to Xunantunich (Maya for “Maiden of the Rock”) which sits just inside the Western border of Belize. Before reaching the entrance of this ancient city, your party will board a 19th century hand-cranked ferry which takes you across the Mopan River. The Maya ruins of Xunantunich are actually located on one of the highest plateaus in the area and it is possible to climb to the top of "El Castillo", the largest of the temples at this site. From this vantage point one gains a panoramic view of the Cayo District and nearby Guatemala, and breath-taking scenery of untouched jungles. After tour we take a short drive to your hotel for dinner and accommodations at Cayo area hotel.(L/D)

Days 3

Depart from your hotel and head southwest to the Chiquibul Forest Reserve for a visit to the famous Maya site of Caracol (Maya for Snail), the largest Maya city in Belize. This site in size rivals that of neighboring Tikal. “Canaa”, the largest and most impressive temple at this site is still the highest structure in the country. From here one has a panoramic view of a vast empire that once was. The lush primary rainforest vista gives one the sense of peaceful silence interrupted only by a startled bird call or howl of a monkey. Picnic lunch while at Caracol. In the afternoon you will continue your exploration in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, with stops made at Rio Frio Caves and time for a quick swim at the Rio On bathing pools. Return to your Cayo area lodge. (B/L/D)

Days 4

Morning departure for short drive to the Rainforest Medicine Trails. As you walk along well defined trails, your guide will point out plants and herbs once used by the Maya and still used by Belizeans today for medicinal purposes. Samples from many of these plants and trees have been sent worldwide in the search of cures for diseases such as cancer. After exploring nature’s pharmacy, board your canoe for a trip down the Macal branch of the Belize River. Along the limestone cliffs of the River you look for parrots, toucans and iguanas, as they hang precariously from trees along the river. After lunch, you start your return to Belize City, with a stop at Cahal Pech Maya Ruins which boasts the restoration of many masks, stairways, and arch structures only found at this site. Upon arrival in Belize City check in at Municipal (Domestic) Airport for 15-minute air transfer to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye for 4 nights of Island Ambience. (B/L)
